Proper Footwear Tips and Suggestions to Help Prevent Foot Conditions
Foot Conditions
- Bunion
- Inflamed swelling of the small sac on the first big toe joint.
- Bunionette
- Inflamed swelling of the small sac on the joint of the little toe.
- Foot Bursitis
- The bursas are three fluid filled sacks that cushion the Achilles tendon which move over the heel bone. Inflammation in these sacks due to injury or pressure is called Bursitis. To prevent this condition wear well-fitting athletic shoes when playing contact sports, warm up before athletic practice or competition, and wear warm socks in cold weather.
- Diabetic Neuropathy
- The loss of sensation, numbness, or even hypersensitivity caused by diabetes.
- Fungus Nails
- Fungus nails is an unsightly condition which can be difficult to treat Sweaty shoes and moist socks can be a contributing factor. It may start as white or yellow patches of discoloration eventually growing thick, deformed, discolored. It may also start to crumble. Try keeping your feet dry by wearing socks that will absorb wetness with moisture management. Avoid synthetic nylon socks that trap in sweat. Air shoes in between wears, alternate shoes not wearing the same pair day after day. Wear a light and breathable shoe.
- Hammer Toe
- Toes are drawn back in a claw like position.
- Interdigital Neuroma
- Pain, burning, or tingling on the top of the forefoot.
- Knee Pain
- Overuse injury, discomfort, usually from shock and jarring.
- Metatarsalgia
- Disorder/irregularity associated with the bottom of the forefoot.
- Pes Cavus
- High arched foot usually firm and rigid and an outward tilt of the heel.
- Pes Planus
- Inward tilt of the heel, and an outward flair of the forefoot (flat foot).
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel pain syndrome discomfort thru the arch.
- Posterior Tibia Tendonitis
- Inflammation of a tendon originating in the calf.
- Pronation
- An inward rotation over the arch of the hind and mid-foot.
- Runner’s Toe/ Black Toenail
- This condition comes from repeated trauma to the toenail from hitting or rubbing up against the front of the shoe, top of the shoe or a combination of both happening. Because blood collects under the nail, the toenail may become black or deep purple. What causes this foot condition? Wearing your shoes too short, too tight or from the foot sliding back and forth in the shoe. To avoid this make sure your shoes are properly fit.
- Shin Splints
- Tenderness along the inside lower 2/3 of the shinbone.
- Supination
- An outward rotation of the foot away from the arch.
