Not ashamed to wear his New Balance to Golds Gym

Glad to see that Jerry Lanson, commentator for the Christian Science Monitor didn't give in to peer pressure to wear something trendy to the gym.

He's planning on sticking to his "white New Balance cross-trainers after all". Read what Jerry wrote here.

After all, New Balance shoes are trendy!

    Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there.

Exercise reduces stress and we all know mom's are stressed. So make a promise to yourself to put on your New Balance shoes this week and do something for yourself. Walk, run or head to the gym. It is the best gift that you could give yourself, not to add a more energetic and happy Mom to the kids.

    Our New Logo

Did anyone happen to catch our logo change this past Saturday?

Wanna know why we changed? Several Months ago our website underwent a usability and quality assurance review from New Balance and we discovered that our logo was actually not really the approved version that independently owned New Balance Concept stores should be using. So, we made the switch.

Thanks to Johnson Mon at New Balance for helping me obtain the correct logo too!

Here's the new logo and you should only see this type of logo on the Authorized New Balance Concept Stores:

You Ran Your Race, Now Help Them Run Theirs-Donating Running Shoes

I was speaking to a friend of mine about my last blog and he asked a very good question. What do I do with all my retired shoes? Even casual runners and walkers can accrue quite a pile of debunked shoes. The thought of my favorite old 1222 ending up in a landfill makes me cringe so how could I give them a second life. There is the organization Shoes4Africa that takes donated old running shoes and gives them to desperately needy children in Africa. They also sponsor races to raise AIDS awareness. The New York Road Runners will be waiting at the finish line of the ING New York Marathon to collect shoes right off the marathoners' feet for this organization. If your in New York on Marathon Monday bring as many old pairs as you can (*new ones too for that matter). If your interested in a charity closer to home One World Running donates shoes to needy individuals in Africa, the US and Latin America. Soccer cleats are also much appreciated by both organizations as well. These are great charities to sponsor especially for running clubs and school teams. They do ask that the shoes still have a decent outsole and about 100 miles worth of life in them. It is also a good idea to wash them and let them air dry before shipping. Take a look at the organizations sites for more info on donating.

    A Green New Balance

Living green means doing your part to make things better, and I know that isn't easy. It seems like you need to do a year of research just to go to the grocery store. However, it's great to find out that brands you already love are just as neurotic about reducing their ecological impact as you are. Check out some fun facts about New Balance:

-In 2007, NB launched several apparel items that used eco-friendly fabrics like bamboo, and coconut fibers. Bamboo is one of the fastest renewable resources on earth and the coconut husks used to make our coconut fabrics are post-consumer from the restaurant industry.

-NB recycles more than 2,280 tons of material every year

-All of NB's footwear is made without the use of polyvinyl chloride

-All NB shoe boxes are made from 100% post consumer materials and of course are 100% recyclable

-By insulating and focusing on energy efficiency in our Norway, Boston, Lawrence, and Ontario facilities, NB corporate reduced their eco-impact by 84,500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide, 350 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide and 140 pounds of Nitrogen Oxides in one year.

    Endorsed by No One

I was talking with a buddy of mine about all the people we see that wear New Balance and he asked why New Balance doesn't do endorsement deals. It's a good question. New Balance has an "Endorsed by no one" philosophy. Basically, we would rather spend our money on the technology we put in to our shoes then on celebrity-athletes wearing them. We do help sponsor some professional runner, running events, and charities like Girls on the Run. Which New Balance thinks is a better way to spread the word then lots of flashy ads. The bread and butter of our business is not the pro-athlete but the real athlete that's up a 5 am trying to beat his personal best. That's why we're endorsed by no one!

Fall Sportswear Inspired by Shanghai Skyline

New Balance has teamed up with sportswear designer Eyan Allen on its new autumn 08 running collection. The line takes inspiration from the Shanghai skyline, but the functional components are the most interesting. That  includes ipod/mp player features on the forearm for ease of use in motion, hand snugs, watch ports, zoned venting and '360 degree reflectivity' for night runs. With great style and function it should be a good fall.
