Best Shoes for Hammertoes

I received an email from a customer today looking for shoes that are good for hammertoes. Hammertoes are permanent claw-like positioning of the toes, usually involving the second and/or third toes. It can also be accompanied by localized pain in the joint or by the appearance of corns and calluses.

I suggested to my customer that she will need a shoe with a roomy, high toe box. This allows the toes to have room and not feel cramped together, therefore easing pain. A roomy toe box would be a New Balance model with a SL-2 last.

We have a great feature on our website that allows you to search by last. When you go to this page, click on Men, Women or Kids - then click on the last that you are looking for. In my customers case, she would click on SL-2. 24 different shoe models appeared for her to look at. What a great selection!

Ouch! I really hate Plantar Fasciitis

Do you ever wake up in the morning, stand up and want to fall back down? I woke up with the most excruciating pain in my right foot. I know what it is because I am in constant contact with tons of podiatrists. It's the dreaded Plantar Fasciitis. It literally feels like a rubber band is about to snap in my foot!  I know I am not the only one with this, because I help at least 1 out of every 5 customers a day with it. SO…I decided to look online and find something that will at least help me get through the day today. The best thing you can do is start your day with a stretching exercise. I found the following stretch most beneficial for me. Thanks About.com!

 1. Stand barefoot.

 2. Left one heel off the ground but keep the ball of the foot and toes flat.

3.You will feel a stretch on the underside of the ball of the foot.

    4. Hold for a count of 10. Release.

    5. Repeat 10 times.

  What exercises work for you?

Shin Splints

I hate Shin Splints! I always struggle with trying to avoid shin splints I think that it is my bodies way of reminding me that I am not "built for running." They start as a minor annoyance but can build to an immense pain. If you've had them, then you know how much fun stairs can be!

Shin splints are referred to as an overuse injury and are extremely common. Causes can vary. A sudden increase in miles or mild to severe pronation can all contribute to the injury.

My original treatment plan was Motrin prescribed by a corpsman - it didn't help much. Since then I have found that stretching the calf and lots of ice helps a lot. I think that the most important thing is finding a shoe that provides a nice combination of stability and cushioning and then replacing them before they wear out. Right now I’m wearing the New Balance 1222's but most of the stability shoes work for me.
