Hey Leo, We Have Your Size In Stock

You may have heard of Ukrainian, Leonid Stadnik? At 8-foot-5 he's the world's tallest human. I read about Leonid a few years ago in the USA Today. Back then he was only 8-foot-4. Amazingly, he's still growing. According to his Wikipedia entry, at the age of 14 he developed a pituitary gland tumor that secreted large amounts of growth hormone, resulting in gigantism.

Leonid is back in the news because he's been given a new giant sized bicycle and he's also received a giant car by President Viktor Yushchenko.

I knew this from reading about him previously but you might not. Stadnik unfortunately had to quit his job as a Veterinarian on a cow farm due to frostbite on his feet. Leo was walking to work in his socks because his shoes didn't fit. He has a 17" foot.

Hmmm, I think I know some folks that manufacturer and sell size 17 shoes. This is the kind of story that New Balance should jump at. Leo needs some size 17's and New Balance is looking to expand their marketing horizons by tripling their marketing budget. If Leo can make the front page of every major media outlet on the planet with a new Bicycle I think I'd be getting him some new shoes. It's a good deed and that kind of coverage can't be bought.

If you happen to wear a size 17, we can help you out. Did you know that we carry up to size 20? I tried our Size Finder for Mens, Width D, Size 17. We currently have 27 different models across 5 categories available in that Size and Width.

New Balance Reportedly Set To Triple Its Marketing Budget

The Wall Street Journal published an interesting story regarding New Balance this past Friday which covered some new initiatives that New Balance is preparing to take on the Marketing front. I call it interesting because historically New Balance has not been an organization known for making a big marketing splash. They've been known for developing that coveted grass root group of extremely loyal customers.

What you don't see is New Balance promoting stylish series of Lebron`esk commercials. Is that all about to change? Perhaps, the WSJ reported in this article that New Balance, as part of a broader overhaul has geared up and it tripling its advertising budget and doubling its consumer research budget.

How does that fare against industry leaders Nike and Adidas? Here are the 2007 advertising budgets for all three organizations. In 2007 New Balance spent $19.7M on advertising (source TNS Media Intelligence). Tripling that budget is going to have an impact on the market and without question new consumers are going to see New Balance in a new light.

Expect to see the new ad campaigns kick off this week. Coinciding with the NCAAs we should be seeing the familiar "Love/Hate" style ads that we saw in the ad market place over the last couple of years.

So, who is New Balance targeting with these new ads? Youth, if you remember when Rob DeMartini took over for Jim Davis the growth goal bar was raised fairly high. Rob is expected to Double sales to $3 Billion by 2012. Rob knows he needs to reach out to new consumers to achieve these goals and at the same time continue to produce a great product that has generated legions of loyal customers.

If ever there was a company in a unique position to connect with new market segments it's New Balance. Why? They literally have millions of loyal evangelists already wearing their shoes. I randomly talk to folks wearing New Balance on a constant basis, they all have one thing in common... they love the shoes.

I believe that they'll hit their goals, how about you?

Here's one of the new Commercials.

The race I'll be running on April 4th is the Iron Girl 5K in Clearwater Florida. The Iron Girl is a great organization whose mission is to empower women toward a health lifestyle. Iron Girl has grown from two 10K/5K events since 2004 to ten events nationwide, consisting of run/walk, duathlon and triathlon events. To date, Iron Girl has celebrated with finishers ranging in age from 5 to 81 years of age and from beginner to professional status. This will be a great time to take your daughter to her first race. Hopefully the team will redeem itself from our rainy showing at the Ocean Drive 5K. Come check it out.

Ocean Drive 5K results

The Ocean Drive 5K was last Saturday, though no time in South Beach is a bad time. It did rain quite hard that morning, which lead to soggy and cranky runners. By noon the race was over and the sun was out. We raised funds for Mount Sinai Canter Research Center and in the end had a great time. I hope that next year the sun will be on our side and my running mates and I will cut some time off this race.

Canvas and Suede

For all of the Retro fans out there New Balance just released two new 574's. The Canvas and Suede 574 mix two of the most popular sneaker materials in a vibrant green, and no suede collection could be complete without a royal blue color-way. These are sleek; I only wish they made a more neutral option as well, but teal and bright blue do jump out at you.

Fall Sportswear Inspired by Shanghai Skyline

New Balance has teamed up with sportswear designer Eyan Allen on its new autumn 08 running collection. The line takes inspiration from the Shanghai skyline, but the functional components are the most interesting. That  includes ipod/mp player features on the forearm for ease of use in motion, hand snugs, watch ports, zoned venting and '360 degree reflectivity' for night runs. With great style and function it should be a good fall.
