Yoga Shoes

I always have a mini hygiene panic-attack when I go to Yoga class.  I'm not allowed to wear street shoes in the studio and if I just sport some sox, I'll be slipping and sliding all through my sun salutations. Most of the people just go bare foot our instructor even encourages it. I have spent enough time on military bases in my youth, however, to know the horror of walking around on sweaty floors bare foot so that is not happening. I decided to try the New Balance 631 Yoga shoe out and I was really happy with it. It has a nice gummy sole that gives better grip for me on the mat then being barefoot and there is nothing to encumber my movement, unlike other yoga shoes I have tried. They would be really great for modern dance classes, for the same reasons. But best of all I don't have to worry about foot cooties in the studio.

Men's Olympic Trials

The running world is gearing up for another big race, the New York Marathon. I use the word big on purpose, four times as many people participant in the marathon as the population of my hometown. That's not the only exciting event  that will be happening in the world of running on race weekend. The men's Olympic trials for the marathon will be held on November 3rd.  The best runners will be competing for the coveted spots. All the superstars with be there James Carney, Khalid Khannouchi, and Meb Keflezighi. I have to say I'm really cheering for Fasil Bizuneh. No one knew about this runner till a few months ago and he is certainly the black horse of the trials. The thing I love about road racing is that a relative unknown can, on occasion, come to the big times. So go Bizuneh and good luck to all the Olympic hopefuls. Check out everyone at the Men's Olympic Trials

Planning on Running This Winter?

I really wanted to showcase these shoes, the 921. First off, I hate snow (hence, why I live in Tampa). I am famous for taking headers on slightly icy sidewalks. Whenever I am in Boston visiting the family in winter I always see people running outside and I look at them like 1. They're crazy and 2. It's incredible that they haven't slipped and broken their skull. Yet some of our die-hard outdoor runners still want to run outside in the Fall and Winter. Well, lucky day, this shoe is built just for that. This premium runner has an Anti-Freeze Midsole, Bioshield, snow shedding lugs, sticky rubber outsole, and removable ice spikes. All of this on top of the usual support and cushioning that you expect from NB. I think I might need a pair just to walk around Bean-town during the holidays, but our winter runners will really feel the difference.

T'ai Chi Runing-Isn't that an Oxymoron?

We don't think much about technique in our day to day lives. Everything we do, however, from sitting up to taking a step has a proper technique that makes the motion healthier and more elegant. When one starts a running or walking regiment, the need for technique becomes apparent. How is it that someone at the same fitness level as me can go farther and run/walk with less pain or injury then me? Answer: proper technique. This is the reason why New Balance decided to partner with ChiRunning® and ChiWalking®. These popular new running and walking techniques follow the inner principles of T'ai Chi, (you may know it as the slow motion routines that groups of people practice in the park). T'ai Chi is all about finding perfection and meaning in the simplest movements. I find running by itself to be a very cathartic routine, so to add another level to it and improve my performance, what could be better. For more information and some very cool articles check out New Balance ChiRunning Partnership.

The New 1123!!!

The new 1123 has just arrived! Its predecessor the 1122 was a staple of the NB line for a long time and we've been waiting to see if they could out do themselves. Well, I am happy to report they have. The 1123 has all the positive attributes of the 1122; it is a great high mileage runner, with all the motion control and cushioning of the original. This time around, however, it is lighter and sleeker then the 1122 (which was a little boxy), but still retains its SL-2 last and roomy toe box. If you where a fan of the 1122, or if you are in need of a top end motion control and cushioning shoe, give the 1123 a try.

M8574-When Zips and Retros Meet

Two of the most popular movements in the NB line are the Zips and the Retros. The Retro styles have a hip urban feel, with their nostalgic styling and funky color ways. The Zips have been hugely popular because of their ground breaking cushioning technology and sleek appearance. So our sneaker geniuses thought, "Hey, what if we put them together". That is how the M8574 was born, a retro upper built on a Zip bottom. It's the best of both worlds. Look for them soon.

I Love My Hobbit Feet and NB Does Too!

If you have read this blog with regularity, you will know that I have a love/hate relationship with my feet. Any woman with a size 7.5 2E would feel the same. Yes, they are hobbit feet, but they are my hobbit feet. It is not easy to have an extra wide woman's foot. Most shoe companies pretend as if we do not exist. One of the reasons I came to work for NB was because I could wear the shoes. Nevertheless, I'm young and I don't want to wear old lady trainers. Now the love of my shoe life was my 1222- cool looking and fit great. After incessant complaints by co-workers and my running companion on the state of my year and a half old pair, I finally caved in and got the 1223. This does not come in women's 2E, but the 8 D fit perfect. The cushion is great and it fits my heel better. Also with the width of my foot the tongue of the 1222 would always slip out. The rise on the 1223 is higher so I don't look like I'm busting out. Now I've advocated alternating shoes when working-out so I decided to take my own advise and get another shoe so both pairs last longer. I went with the 858. I tried it on because Runners World loved it, but I bought it because I love it. Oh, the ride is like butter. And if you're a heaver runner you'll be in heaven it. Plus the woman's version has a pretty color-way. So hobbit-feet rejoice you can find running shoes that look good and work well too.

Run NYC

We've just finished the Chicago Marathon and the ING New York Marathon is right around the corner, 24 days to be precise. Given how haggard Chicago was, and how close the race was for both the men and women, there is added pressure and excitement building up for New York. The New York is the only of the big five marathons that I've seen first hand and it was a wonderful spectacle. Even if you are not running, it is totally worth going if you are in the NYC. Here's a great shot to see how 30,000 some odd people on a street look like

Girls On the Run

I've been paying a lot of attention to New Balance's partnership with the Komen Foundation in our fight to end breast cancer, but we are involved in other activities as well. One of my favorite organizations is Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. New Balance has been a proud sponsor of Girls on the Run since 1998 two years after the program was founded and two years before Girls on the Run became an official Non-Profit organization. As part of our commitment to the success of the program, New Balance provides sponsorship funding to aid operational and management costs. In addition, New Balance provides shoes for 500 needy girls each year, as well as a pair of running shoes for each council director. New Balance is also the title sponsor of the Official Girls on the Run 5K Race Series, which takes place in cities all over North America each year. Check out their complete Calendar of Events, or learn more about Girls on the Run. This is a  fun and wonderful organization to get involved with as a runner or a whole family.

Safety Tips for Warm Weather Racing

I consulted our friends at the Road Runners Club of America in order to get the best advice for running in hot weather

  1. Avoid Dehydration- It seems like stating the obvious, but a runner looses 6-12 ounces of fluid every 20 minutes. It is important to drink every 20-30 minutes. Warning signs that your running while dehydrated are a persistent elevated pulse even after finishing the race, and dark yellow urine. Thirst is not an indicator of hydration needs.

  2. Avoid Overhydration- Other wise known as hyponatremia, often occurs in hot weather marathons where the runner, fearing dehydration, over does the fluids and dilutes the sodium levels in the blood. Hyponatremia can be more dangerous then dehydration, and often effects slower runners (5 to 6 hour marathoners). Self-awareness is the best means to safe guard against this.

  3. Temperature Control- You should avoid running in temperatures above 98.6 or humidity higher then 70%. Humidity is a greater culprit then heat. If there is a great deal of moisture in the air the evaporation process, which cools your body, will not take place. Also, know your environment, if you usually run in 65 degrees weather and its 90 degrees on race day take that into consideration.

  4. Medical Problems-If you have any heart or respiratory problems consult your doctor before starting any run outdoors

  5. Know Your Space-Plan your run so you will have plenty of shade and areas to re-hydrate.

  6. Watch For Heat Stroke- If you become dizzy, nauseated, irritable, have chills or cease to sweat; you should stop running immediately, find shade and drink replacement fluids like Gatorade. These are the early signs of heat stroke that can be deadly.

  7. Watch out For Each Other- We run for ourselves but we race together. If you see anyone showing signs of sever fatigue or heat stroke, assist them in getting to help. It is better to loose a race and save a life.

Tragic Runs-When is it Too Much

It was a grueling race by all accounts.  Berhane Adere- Ethiopia retained her title and yet another Kenyan, Patrick Ivuti placed for the men in the Chicago Marathon. Despite their great success, the race was marred by tragedy. The weather was not only hot in Chicago but also humid which is a lethal combination for distance running. The coordinators stopped the race at 11:30 a.m. due to heat concerns. Still 49 people were hospitalized, 250 were treated on site and one runner, police officer Chad Schieber, succumbs to his injuries. It is a terrible shame when one looses their life in pursuit of a sport one loves. However, that was not the only race related death on Sunday. At the Army Ten-Mile Run in Arlington, Va., another unidentified runner also collapsed and later pasted from his injures. My deep felt condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Schieber, and the unnamed racer in Arlington. I hope, also that these event will cause more runners to take extra precaution in this extremely hot autumn.  Running and especially racing can be one of the most life changing activities one can be a part of. The race in the end is only with our selves. I will be posting a following blog about  tips for running in hot weather.

Tweed 07'

Just when you think tweed is just for jackets, new for the Fall of 2007 New Balance has come out with a hot new spin on this traditionally dowdy fabric. The mute colors and fun textures will be a sophisticated twist on sneaker wearing. I can just image Kanye West wearing these. For more info, and to check out more cool stuff visit our friends at HighSnobiety. This is a necessary RSS feed (along with ours of course) for any sneaker head.

A Work Of Art

I was looking at the online portfolio of one of my favorite photographers, Jody Ake. Ake is known for reviving the wet collodion processing method. This is a very old way for reproducing photos on glass. You can only image my surprise when I saw this image. Yes mixed in with all the edgy still lifes and beautiful portraits was this well-loved 803. I'm glad Jody and I both think a good all-terrain shoe is a work of art. Chicago Marathon Days Away

One of the most anticipated races of the year is only a few day away. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Chicago Marathon, and New Balance is excited to be a part of the festivities. Last year Robert Cheruiyot-Kenya and Berhane Adere -Ethiopia placed first. Who looks good to win this year? Well, the experts do not have a solid favorite; it is really going to be an exciting race. Felix Limo-Kenya (who won in 2005) and Evans Rutto-Kenya (won 2003 and 2004) will be running this year. Cheruiyot will also be defending his title and is currently the World Marathon Majors number one elite male athlete. It is always exciting to see the very best compete in their sport; it will be a great race. Given the last few years, I think it would be wise to learn how to say, "Congratulations on win the race" in Swahili.

Fighting for the Cause One Talk Show at a Time

There is an evil strand of flu that is passing around the office at New Balance Tampa, and as a result, my runny nose and I got to work from home today. Which also meant me and my Tivo got to spend some time together. Before my boss gets mad, it was constructive TV watching. With October, being Breast Cancer Awareness month Ellen Degeneres is teaming up with the New Balance and Susan G. Komen to help raise funds and hopes for the cure. Chris Mann & Christine Madigan of New Balance presented a check for $500,000 to Susan G. Komen. These funds where raised from sales of the Lace Up for the Cure Collection. In addition, another $100,000 went to the Komen on behalf of Ellen to help reach her goal of raising $1 million during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Not to mention all the audience members got NB Shoes. Beat that Oprah!

A Green New Balance

Living green means doing your part to make things better, and I know that isn't easy. It seems like you need to do a year of research just to go to the grocery store. However, it's great to find out that brands you already love are just as neurotic about reducing their ecological impact as you are. Check out some fun facts about New Balance:

-In 2007, NB launched several apparel items that used eco-friendly fabrics like bamboo, and coconut fibers. Bamboo is one of the fastest renewable resources on earth and the coconut husks used to make our coconut fabrics are post-consumer from the restaurant industry.

-NB recycles more than 2,280 tons of material every year

-All of NB's footwear is made without the use of polyvinyl chloride

-All NB shoe boxes are made from 100% post consumer materials and of course are 100% recyclable

-By insulating and focusing on energy efficiency in our Norway, Boston, Lawrence, and Ontario facilities, NB corporate reduced their eco-impact by 84,500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide, 350 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide and 140 pounds of Nitrogen Oxides in one year.
