Coffee High in Antioxidants

Don't forget to have a cup or two of java after your morning workout. A report that came out today says moderate coffee use is good for you. It is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet.

Can coffee help your exercise program? Some may say yes. But don’t forget coffee can dehydrate you, so don’t over do it and drink lots of water during your workout. Oh yeah and don't forget that too much water may not be good for us runners.
Ugh, aren’t you tired of these studies?

Difference in Last Fit

This is often a question a customer: If I wear a New Balance shoe that in on a SL-2 last, would I wear the same size in a SL-1 last? The answer is no.

The reason the sizing in a shoe is different is because the SL-2 last has a wider and higher toe box. And if you are used to that extra room, the SL-1 will feel tighter on your foot and generally will be uncomfortable. Just as if your used to the SL-1 tighter fit. The SL-2 last will make your move around and be very loose if you don’t need the extra room.

The difference between the SL-1 and SL-2 is this:
SL-1 is standard fit for all of these: heel width, instep height, toe box depth and forefoot width. SL-2 is as follows: standard heel width, high instep height, high toe box depth and wide forefoot width.

New Balance always recommends that you get a Sit and Fit.

Walking For A Cause

Whether you walk for your health or are motivated by other factors, study after study have shown the health benefits of walking.

There is a great article in the September issue of Redbook on page 181 called “Learn to Walk”. You will read about 9 women whose lives were changed by walking through lonliness, stress, disease, and being overweight. The article also touches on walking for a cause with the following organized charity walks. This would be a good motivation to start a walking program.

American Heart Association Walk
Aids Walks
Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
America’s Walk For Diabetes

Back to School Fashion Buzz

Back to school for many kids, means back to fashion.

What's hot for the Fall?

Jeans, Vintage rock band t-shirts and athletic retro shoes.

Now I have to tell you, I went to school for fashion design/merchandising and I have a very open mind when it comes to fashion trends.

But last week-end, I found myself standing in the store with my 14 year old saying, “look at these jeans, they look like rags.” The "new jeans" were very worn out with a lot of holes. The look - the more distressed the jeans - the better. Then he wanted the Rolling Stones t-shirt with those big lips.

We finally agreed, okay on the distressed jeans, but none with holes. Okay on the rock t-shirt, but no big lips, Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here, I could live with that.

The shoes, PF Flyers, which were acquired by New Balance in 2003. These vintage shoes which have made a comeback along with the Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars version now owned by you know who, Nike.

We went with the PF Flyers, the rationale as to why we went with PF Flyers.
Fashion rule number 1 - We only wear New Balance in our house!

Many Concerned with Childhood Obesity

I have noticed a variety of news articles concerning childhood obesity in the last few days. Check out some of these stories about what is being done to fight this battle.

New Balance is helping in the fight to combat childhood obesity. The “Children in Balance Initiative” is a commitment by New Balance to donate 5 million dollars over the next 10 years to Tufts University Freidman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

Bill Clinton has teamed up with the American Heart Association to combat childhood obesity along with the the Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger supports a bill that will limit the sale of soda and "junk food" in public schools.

Sesame Street is taking a stand against childhood obesity also. In case you may have forgotten,
C is for Cookie...! The Cookie Monster no longer gobbles up all of those cookies at one time. He now suggests that his cookies are a “sometimes snack”!

What can you do? Sign up for the America on the Move registry.
John C. Peters, Ph. D., a researcher and co-founder of America On the Move stated, “The new AOM Registry is a research tool that is critically needed to help current and future generations extend both the quality and length of their lives.”

As a small, first step, AOM suggest cutting 100 calories and taking 2000 steps.
